Working with audio recorded on location can be a double-edged sword. Ideally, you'd receive clean, well-recorded audio tracks that require minimal post-processing. However, in practice, this is only sometimes the case. Film productions, for instance, often grapple with challenges like unwanted background noise, which can result from equipment, environmental factors, or even on-set activity. Additionally, wide-angle shots can pose problems, as the boom microphone may not capture audio with the desired clarity due to its distance from the actors. This means that any subpar location audio must be meticulously cleaned and restored. This can involve tasks like de-clipping audio recorded at excessively high levels.
In corporate video, audio quality can exhibit an even more comprehensive range. Some projects may provide pristine audio recordings that require straightforward mixing, while others present substantial challenges. These challenges may include heavily clipped audio, plagued by wind noise, compromised by excessive background sounds, or recorded in a reflective room with the microphone placed too far from the source.
Audio post-production professionals often need to transfer audio between different video editing platforms and digital audio workstations (DAWs). This can be accomplished seamlessly with Advanced Authoring Format (AAF) transfers. However, unexpected issues can still arise. For example, consider a documentary comparing filming locations from an original film shot in the 1970s to their current appearances. If the documentary was filmed at 25 frames per second (fps) and the audio mix was completed at this frame rate, a problem can emerge if it's later discovered that the footage should have been produced at 23.976 fps. To correct this, the director decided to conform the footage to the new frame rate, resulting in a 4.1% slowdown. As a result, the audio must also be slowed down by the same amount. Tools like Avid X-Form in Pro Tools perform the necessary adjustments to maintain the audio's pitch. While this may solve the problem, it introduces an additional technical hurdle that could have been avoided with better communication and planning.
